My ancestor, William DUFF (Dove) shows up on the 1850 census. The census taker mustve thought that this was the correct spelling. William Dove is living in the househoold of the Brocks, a wealthy land-owning family. He wouldve been about 25 and 35 in 1850 and 1860, seems a bit old to still be an apprentice. Its possible his wife Easter/Esther and children were slaves of the Brocks and that is the reason he stuck around. He is listed as being a Cooper.
He wouldn’t have been an apprentice at that age, but FMC who were skilled craftsmen often lived on the farms of the well-off whites for whom they worked.
