Marshall A. Carter.

MARSHALL ARCHIE CARTER (or, perhaps, Archie or Archibald Marshall Carter, though his initials are shown as “M.C.” above) was born in 1860 to William Carter (1833-ca1875) and Mary Cox Carter (ca1830-??) of Sampson County. His father William was the son of Michael Carter (1805-ca1875) and his wife Patience. Marshall Carter married Margaret Frances Jacobs. They are buried in the First Congregational Church, Dudley, Wayne County.

I am a great-great grandson of Marshall’s sister Sarah / Sallie Carter. Sarah (Sallie) married John Henry Cobb in Wayne County in 1880; after John Henry died Sallie moved with her children to Arkansas in the mid-1890s – including her daughter (and my great-grandmother) Texas Irene Cobb, Vance Cobb, William James Cobb, Mary Elizabeth Cobb and Carrie Cobb. Sallie/Sarah initially settled in Mariana (Lee County) Arkansas, but eventually moved to North Little Rock where she died in 1934. Her daughter Texas Irene and her siblings were very light-skinned – many people thought they were white. Any additional information on the Carter family (her parents William Carter (1833-1875) and Mary Carter 1833-?, her grandparents Michael Carter (1803-1875) and Patience Carter, 1813-?? or her siblings Marshall Carter, Jane Carter (born 1851), Isaac T. Carter (born 1856) would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to get a better understanding of why they left Wayne County when they did. I am also working on the Cobb side, which is difficult because John Henry Cobb changed his name from Bryant to Cobb around 1880. His father was Barnaby Bryant, and his mother was Mary Bryant.
Guess what? Just got a new Carter match at Ancestry.com. She’s descended from Marshall’s son John Wesley! The mystery deepens….
Another one of Marshall’s sisters Frances (Francenia on the 1860 Census) also relocated to Arkansas when Sallie Carter (married name Cobbs) left NC for Arkansas around 1895. Frances had married Berry Williford in 1869 while still in North Carolina. Once they arrived in Arkansas the Cobbs and the Willifords initially settled in Phillips County, but many of them later moved to Little Rock.
