Surnames: Anson County, 1860.
by Lisa Y. Henderson
The following surnames are found among free people of color in the 1860 census of Anson County:
BAKER, BASS, BUNTING, CONRAD, EVANS, FREEMAN, GATHINGS, HAIN, HEDSPETH, HONEYCUT, HOOKS, HOWEL, JACKSON, JONES, KNIGHT, LOCKLEAR, LOMAC/LOMAX, MUMFORD, MURRAY, NEWBERRY, RANDAL, REID, REVEL, ROBINSON, SHAVER, SMITH, SNEED, STEWART, TEAL, TRUEBLOOD, WALKER, WARREN, WATTS, WILLIAMS, WILLOUGHBY.
Some of these families seem to travel together to specific counties in NC, VA, SC & KY. I have been researching a lot of these as they show up in my family tree (and DNA). Particularly, Bass, Howel (Howell), Jones, Knight, Mumford. Thanks for your work!
There was definitely migration of interrelated FPC families within and between states. Thanks for taking the time to comment, and I’ll keep an eye out for those surnames. Best regards — Lisa H.
I have been doing some research of my family. The Mumford family and I seem to hit some roadblocks. I know that my great great grandfather Andrew Mumford was born in Anson County and lived in Anson County and Chesterfield County, SC. He moved from North Carolina to Broxton, GA with his wife Eliza Collins Mumford. I desire to find out more information about the Mumfords in Anson County and Chesterfield, SC (Cheraw).
Hi, Reginald. My genealogical research is generally confined to my own and collateral lines, but I’ll keep a look out for documents related to Mumfords. Best regards.
Thanks, Lisa, for your continued vigilance. I have Warricks and Revels here as known direct lines, but am seeing lots of Locklear, Evans, Reid, Robinson, Smith, Jackson, Howell DNA matches. Looks like I’ll have to revisit Anson.
