Those of negro blood have been excluded.
by Lisa Y. Henderson
We have procured from the homes of these Indian families a few photographs, showing the type of these Croatan Indians today living in Sampson County. It will be readily seen that they are neither white people, negroes or mulattoes. They all have straight black hair, the Indian nose and lips, their skin a light brown hue, mostly high cheek bones, erect in their carriage, steel gray eyes and an intelligent countenance. Where the white blood predominates many of them have beards.
They are the true type of the Croatan Indian and have always resided and lived in this section and known as “free persons of color.” There are a few of these people that have intermarried with mulattoes, but all those of negro blood have been excluded from this sketch and no demands or claims are made in their behalf, as under the law they are properly classed with the negroes.
From George E. Butler, “The Croatan Indians of Sampson County, North Carolina. Their Origin and Racial Status. A Plea for Separate Schools,” (1916).
This is a joke right and science can debunk these untruths that have misplaced and divided family until this day. They were multi-ethnic ancestors. This is disgraceful and not at all Native.#smh

This was written in 1916. It’s not a joke, it’s a quotation.
The quotation is scientifically incorrect driven by Colonialism biases and social stigmas that continue to this day. It is hypothetical and inconclusive. Even in 1916 they knew it was not true that they were 💯% Native American. And, this is something that need to be corrected with truth and respect to our entire genetic make-up that may vary. I am Native American but absolutely embrace all my ancestry regardless the ethnicity. The power of healing is to speak truth to the power of our Native American multi-ethnic ancestry. Respect to all who made the utimate sacrifice.
It is not offered as science, or for its accuracy. It is a historical document, as are most other quoted in this blog. It reflects a viewpoint espoused by many in that era, whether they knew it was false or not.
Thank you for the clarification because historical documents unfortunately can promote whimsical ideology in this case conflicting with scientific evidence. The information for family genealogy is helpful but for genetic ancestry is inaccurate. It isn’t personal it is ethical inquiry and investigation from a scientific approach. Hopefully, this will encourage relatives to be acknowledge and accept the truth.
